A Writer on Writing

When I write I have 4 rules!!

These are rules to allow my creativity and story to grow to its greatest potential.

1st.
I write these stories and tales for me, not others. No one is a harsher critic on me than me. But by the story's end if I like them, chances are others will too.

2nd.
There is no set story. My writing style I like to say is "chaos theory". For me the story may have an idea or elements/specific scenes I want in it, but the overall story is given all the room it wants to grow. Through this the story becomes something else, something more. Are there ideas that don't make it? Sure. Not every notion/idea works or lives through rewrites.

3rd.
No specific genre/category. I don't write my stories with any hard fast categories. I feel that unconsciously limits the story's imagination into a constrictive box.

4th.
There is NO page limit. To this my writer's mantra is, "the story goes where the story goes". The story may be a short story, novella, or novel. Many times, I've started out with an idea and the story, itself, has its own plans. Follow the story. The story is boss!!

For those people who want to write many fall into that beginner's curse (I hear it all too often) of -- I want to write a specific genre, I'm going to write a specific story length (usually a novel), or just as bad, they have a very rigid story idea that they won't be allowed to stretch past its initial idea. Any and all of these will kill your zest to write, stopping you before you even get started.

By having these rules, I free my imagination to grow into its full potential. I've shocked my own self a time or two.

This is my advice to those wanting to write. Start writing, set NO restrictions, and write for your own enjoyment. Start out by writing a single scene, then another, and another, and another. Before you know it, you will have done something you have only ever talked about.

If you've read this far, I thank you. I'll get off my soapbox now. These are my ideas and rules I live by to help grow my stories to their full potential. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would disagree with what I have written. Not saying they are, just that there are various ways and rules to writing. These are mine. Find what works for YOU.

Thank you one and all for your support. --
